It might seem tempting to yank your kids out of day care the minute you lose your job, not only to save money, but also because you will want to spend your “extra” time with them now that you are not working. However, some mums find that when they release their babysitters and begin taking care of the kids on their own again, there is little time left for their job search. Here are a few tips to help you decide if keeping your kids in daycare is the right choice for you while looking for a new job.
Do You Have Support?
This is an important question to ask yourself. Do you have really reliable support that can help you with the kids for free when you must go to job interviews or spend alone time really focused on your job search? If the answer is no, then you may want to consider keeping that babysitter on for a while longer.
Do You Want to Be A SAHM?
In many cases when a mum releases her child care helpers and takes care of the kids on her own while looking for a job, it turns into a permanent situation. This is fine if that is the goal you have for yourself. If you want to be a SAHM then losing your job could be the perfect catalyst to change things. However, if you do not want that permanently, then you should keep your job search a top priority.
Can You Afford It?
If you can afford your child care while you are unemployed, then you certainly should try to keep it as long as possible, so that you can focus all of your work hour focus on looking for work. Just like when you had a job, you will still get to see your children after work hours.
