When you are in between jobs you must be careful not to look at the time as a “vacation.” Many people make this mistake and then really waste their time in an unwise way. If you are really serious about landing your next job, then your job search is your new job. Here are a few quick tips on how to make sure you are using your time wisely during a job search.

Clock In and Clock Out

You may have never considered doing this, but this is the best way to make sure that you use all of your time efficiently. If you consider yourself actually “at work” during the day then you will use the same kind of discretion about your tasks that you would use at work. If you were at work you would make sure that all of your activities were focused on your job. This is the attitude you need during your job search. Once you clock in make sure that all of your activities are focused on your job search. If there are other things you want to do you will need to wait until after you clock out.

Set Daily Goals

In order to fight off discouragement during a job search it is important to set daily goals that you can reach. This way each day you will feel like you have accomplished something. For example you may set a goal that today you will finish updating your resume. When you have completed this task you can feel good that you are heading in the right direction if you are not to your final destination yet. Try to be specific with you goals, because a vague open ended goal will usually turn into a wasted day.
